À sa guitare takes its name from a song by the 20th century French composer Francis Poulenc. “The album is a journey between different cultures, different continents and different languages,” says Philippe Jaroussky, “but each piece is a world in itself. The idea was to take some risks … sometimes moving to a completely different world between one track and the next.” “We can evoke hugely different colours as we juggle between renaissance music and a song by Barbara,” explains Thibaut Garcia. “It’s our job to play with a palette of colours to produces something unique … We put a great deal of thought into the album, but we also put our hearts into it.”

Aranjuez.jpg

Philippe Jaroussky & Thibaut Garcia record "Septembre" (Barbara)

The French singer Barbara left a lasting impact around the world, known for heartfelt songs of lost love. Philippe Jaroussky sings her wistful "Septembre" with guitarist Thibaut Garcia on their album together, À sa guitare. Discover here: https://w.lnk.to/asgLY The album takes its name from a song by the 20th century French composer Francis Poulenc, but its frame of reference is extraordinarily wide, both culturally and stylistically: its 22 tracks range across 400 years and music by composers and songwriters from France, Britain, Austria, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and the USA. As Thibaut explains, "The guitar has an image as both a classical instrument and a pop instrument, so it has a bit of a double life. On an album like this we can evoke hugely different colors as we juggle between renaissance music and a song by Barbara." Countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and guitarist Thibaut Garcia come together in the bossa nova "Manhã de Carnaval" by Luiz Bonfá, from the original soundtrack of 1959 film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus). Discover this and more on À sa guitare: https://w.lnk.to/asgLY Their first album together sees them as a "two-man solo act", voice and guitar, a duo that transcends the ages. The program features works from across 400 years of musical tradition, with many original arrangements that bring a new perspective on their sources. On the strictly classical side, among the best-known items are Dido’s lament "When I am laid in earth", Schubert’s hair-raising "Erlkönig", and the brilliant Rossini aria "Di tanti palpiti". From nearer our own time, there are such numbers as "Alfonsina y el mar" by the Argentinian Ariel Ramírez (celebrated for his folk mass Misa Criolla) and the wistful "Septembre" by the legendary Parisian chansonnière Barbara. Thibaut Garcia plays Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez: I. Allegro con spirito

Thibaut Garcia describes Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez as "a superb example of Rodrigo’s musical language, which is unique and instantly recognizable." Discover his album centered around this magnificent work, with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and Ben Glassberg: https://w.lnk.to/araLY "It is strongly influenced by Spanish folk music in its harmony, scales and its flamenco strumming or rasgueados, while bearing the composer’s personal mark in its dissonances and nobility," says Thibaut. "When it comes to interpreting such a famous work, it is a matter of finding a balance between what has become accepted practice ... and the need to bring something new and fresh to it."
